The most dark and serious of the Nintendo 3D Zelda games, Twilight Princess pushes the limits of graphical presentation to its maximum limits on the Wii's hardware. It's darker and more disturbing than The Wind Waker. There aren't any bug-eyed pigs, nor effeminate Pirates.

Link is attracted to a parallel dimension referred to as Twilight Realm where he takes the form of Hylian wolf and Hylian Wolf and the form of a Hylian while being guided Midna.

Link transforms into a wolf when he enters the Twilight Realm. He also meets Midna, an enigmatic creature. She informs Link that the kingdom of Hyrule is now under the control of a group shadow beasts led the evil sorcerer Zant. She also reveals that she is the real ruler of Twili but was supplanted by Zant and cursed to her current form.

When Link and Midna arrive at Hyrule Castle, a short cut scene shows the soldiers being killed by the shadow creatures. Link and Midna then escape the castle through an entrance tunnel to enter the Twilight Realm.

In the Twilight Realm, Link can utilize his wolf-like form to move around more freely around the world. He can also make use of his senses to navigate around the world. From hands that come out of toilets to pirates traveling across vast oceans these wacky and unique characters are the core of the game. Twilight Princess continues in the tradition of the previous games, and introduces many memorable characters.

Throughout the story, Link meets new NPCs that are not just intriguing, but also plausible. It's a huge leap forward that a lot of these NPCs don't exist solely as victims they actually are a part of the story. NPCs such as Rusl who explains that the forest is becoming more dangerous now and kidnaps kids as well as the Ordon villager who disguises himself as a wolf while the kids are kidnapped all have distinct personalities.

Other notable characters include Iza, who operates the Boat Rental Cabin as well as Iza's Rapid Ride in the Lanayru Province, Louise, Telma's cat, who assists Wolf Link locate a secret passageway through her bar as well as sewer system to the castle and Faron who's spirit guides Link and Midna to the Forest Temple in the Eldin Province. She accosts Link and informs him of her adventures in the twilight, and how she defeated Zant, the king of Twilight.

Zant is the evil sorcerer that rules the Twilight Realm. He possesses the second part of the Triforce of Wisdom. The goddesses banished him to the Twilight Realm for enslaving their people and enslaving their territory. Zant's magic keeps him permanently in wolf form, but Midna dispells the power and allows him to change into his human form whenever required.

Epona is a better horse that can be used in both wolf and Hylian forms. Link can whistle near certain patches of grass to summon the animal (similar to Majora's Mask). The player is able to name the horse which makes Twilight Princess the first time in the series that the player can personalize their own horse.

Theme

Music is among the most important parts of any Zelda game and it can make a world feel huge exciting, epic, and thrilling. Twilight Princess' soundtrack is often criticized for being inconsistent and sporadic that doesn't capture certain moments of emotion. Contrastingly, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask have captivating music that blossom at exactly the right time to create a feeling of majestic and eerie.

Twilight Princess was composed by Asuka Ohta and Toru Minegishi. Koji Kondo, the composer of the series for the first since Wind Waker, was in charge of overseeing the composers. The soundtrack for Twilight Princess is a bold departure from the traditional approach to the franchise, with a minimalist approach to music and arrangement. The majority of dungeon and field music starts with a single instrumental, creating a mysterious and eerie atmosphere for the player. For instance, the eerie music of Midna's lament makes use of the piano to create an overflowing sense of sorrow for the player.

The most popular examples are dungeon themes, which have a dreary atmosphere. This is evident in the Twilight Realm theme, which has a sonic landscape that would be appropriate for the soundtrack of a David Lynch film. The unsettling and ominous nature of the track is enhanced by the absence of recognizable melodies and traditional arrangement, with dreary drones and bizarre patterns interspersed to create a bleak texture.

A more uplifting and joyous song is Link's hometown, "Faron Woods." This song employs a variety of strings and soft sounds to create a calm and secure experience for the player. The song has subtle references to the most famous scene from the franchise, as it features an thematic riff that's similar to the famous melody that plays at Ocarina of Time's beginning.

There are also some exciting songs in Twilight Princess that change depending on where the player is, what they are doing, and the events that are taking place. For instance the Hyrule Castle Town theme has distinct versions for each area of the town and Central Square being the most popular. Central Square having a more boisterous and full version of the song. These variations add a great flavor to the world of Hyrule that adds a sense of depth and immersion.

Story

The story of Twilight Princess revolves around Link trying to prevent Hyrule from being sucked into the corrupted dimension known as the Twilight Realm. To achieve this, Link takes on the forms of an Hylian, a Wolf and is assisted by a woman named Midna.

Midna was the original ruler of Twili but she was usurped and cursed by Zant to transform into her imp form. Link and Midna are informed by the Sages of the Old Testament that only defeating Ganondorf will be in a position to release them from their curse. The Sages explain that the Mirror of Twilight causes the darkness to exist in the Twilight Realm. Midna and Link travel to the Spirit's Spring, where they encounter monsters that are hostile and kidnap children. Wolf Link's keen ear assists them in tracking children's scent to a bridge nearby and then cross into the Twilight Realm.

They enter the Forest Temple and battle Diababa to obtain the first Fused Shadow. Following this, Faron informs them that the next stop is the Eldin Province to the west (Wii) or east (GCN).

Midna, at the Lakebed Temple of Lanayru teleports Link onto a fiery stone and uses her powers on the ice below Lake Hylia. Rutela's spirit, who was the recently gone Zora queen appears to Link and tells Link that he must visit the Lakebed Temple if he wants to access the treasure of Zora.

Twilight Princess allows you to ride Epona, the horse from Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. Contrary to the name of the set used in the two aforementioned games, Link can now decide the name of the horse by himself.

Midna and Link can recover the remaining Mirror Shards once they arrive in the Twilight Realm. At the Palace of Twilight, the Sages reveal that Midna is actually the true ruler of the Twili however she had been ostracized by the monarchy and turned to the gods for power. The Sages inform them that they will be defeated by Ganondorf when they bring him to light and break the pact made between the Twilight kingdom and Hyrule kingdom.
